The next morning, after eating with the family, Hannah sat in the parlor, writing two letters. One to the solicitor advising him of her continued stay in London and the second to Mrs. Browning, to let her know her return would still be within the next week or so.

As she was adding the direction for her letter to Mrs. Browning, she heard a knock at the door and muffled voices. Moments later, Graves, the butler, stopped at the door with a very large arrangement of hothouse flowers. “Oh, how beautiful!” she said, trying to decide which of Lydia’s regular callers would have sent them.

“They are for you, Your Grace. Would you like them here or in your chambers?”

“Oh! Down here, please. Over on that table if you would.” Hannah’s eyes began to water, and she blinked rapidly. She had never been sent flowers before in her life and it was a humbling thought. She may be able to manage a number of estates all at once, but she had precious little social experience outside of her own home and the Duke’s older friends.

Once Graves had left the flowers and then the room, Hannah walked over to look for a card. Tucked in among the greenery was one of Spencer’s calling cards. The first thing she noticed was that he was still identified on it as the Marquess of Stillwater. She smiled and traced her finger over the script before remembering she was angry with him, scowled and turned it over. On the back he had written Carriage ride at 430? Please say yes.

She smirked when she realized that no one had waited for an answer.
